Are you interested in updating your nursing knowledge and skills? Have you been out of active nursing practice and wish to update your competence and return to a clinical setting? Do you need to meet a continuing education requirement in order to renew or maintain your nursing license?
This RN Refresher Course was created to update and enhance the nursing knowledge and clinical skills of inactive registered nurses preparing for reentry into active practice. The theoretical and clinical components of the course address foundational competencies for medical-surgical nursing in today’s increasingly complex practice settings.
The didactic component of the course is designed to be completed within an academic semester, although the self-paced format allows participants to move forward more quickly if they choose to do so. Those with active licenses may choose to enroll in the didactic component only and earn 45.0 contact hours for license renewal.
The clinical component requires 80 hours in an acute care setting with the schedule determined by the participant and preceptor. Both components must be completed within six months from the time of course registration. Exceptions will be made only in extremely extenuating circumstances.
Objectives:
Individuals who complete the RN Refresher Course will be able to:
- Identify current nursing trends and their relationship to nursing practice.
- Integrate the nursing process as a framework for the provision of client care.
- Demonstrate safe, effective care consistent with current standards of practice.
- Utilize effective communication skills with clients, families, and staff.
- Demonstrate cultural competence in the provision of client care.
- Recognize legal issues related to professional nursing practice.
- Demonstrate an understanding of pharmacological principles and sound nursing judgment through the safe administration of medications.
- Perform a complete health assessment.
- Utilize wellness assessment as a component of care planning.
- Demonstrate an understanding of commonly used laboratory tests as part of the assessment process.
Continuing Education Information
Upon successful completion of the RN Refresher Course, unlicensed RNs will receive a certificate of completion. Currently licensed RNs will receive 45.0 nursing contact hours provided through Bayhealth Medical Center, an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Delaware Nurses Association, and accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
