DEFINITION

Culturally competent health care means optimizing quality care by being respectful of and responsive to the cultural factors that influence patients’ attitudes and behaviors.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Lesbians and women who partner with women have different patterns of access to health care and experience multiple barriers based on their sexual orientation. RTB describes the barriers and how healthcare providers can minimize or remove them.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. List the major findings of the 1999 Institute of Medicine report.
  2. Recognize aspects of the culture of sexual orientation.
  3. Define commonly used terms such as sex, gender identity, and heterosexism.
  4. Describe barriers faced by lesbians and women who partner with women (WPW) when accessing the health care system.
  5. Identify three lesbian health issues.
  6. State the potential impact of a breach in confidentiality and privacy for a lesbian or WPW.
  7. List three ways to make a practice more culturally competent.
