What are CEUs?
n 1970 a national task force of volunteers met to establish a form of credit for continuing education different from the semester system used in higher education. That credit was named the "Continuing Education Unit" and has come to be known as the "CEU". A CEU is defined as: "Ten contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction."
The International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) is the founder and guardian of the CEU and determines the criteria for awarding CEUs. Corexcel is an authorized provider of the CEU. This type of credit is typically given for courses taken from training companies who've endured the rigorous process of accreditation but are not considered universities. CEUs are able to be converted to college credit more often than not.
Important: Beware of organizations offering CEUs without the accreditation to provide them. If you are taking a course for CEUs make sure the organization providing the credits is accredited through the International Association for Continuing Education and Training. You can check to see if an organization is accredited using the IACET directory. Be sure to check the accreditation of any online entity prior to enrolling in a course.
